Phatmon66's Tutorial on Ken Sugimori style art by Phatmon Phatmon66's Tutorial on Ken Sugimori style art by Phatmon
This is my Tutorial on how to draw sugimori style. I hope it helps. I didn't do this until I felt I was good enough to create a tutorial on.

[Stamp] Gratitude by Creepiest thank you for the fav stamp by fear-the-brillianceThank you for the fav by fear-the-brilliance

This is only for tablet users

Layers were used and should be used Ex Line art color Sketch etc

Will be one for paint tool sai

Can it work on any art program without using PS or Paint tool sai? yes it can the tools may differ but the process is the same

Can Black be used for the shadowing? yes it can but it needs to be above the color layer set on a low opacity like 30 - 50%

If you work on a big canvas then you need to resize it changing the res to 72 and the pixels to a decent amount like 800 or something around those numbers

How do i put it in a PNG and why?  A PNG image doesnt have a background instead the pic is made like a cut out, you can put it anywhere, Also A PNG looks better than a JPEG the grains aren't there. Programs have an option when you save to put it in a PNG for sai its FILE > EXPORT AS> PNG for Photoshop its FILE > SAVE FOR WEB DEVICES > PRESET PNG -24

Do i need Paint tool sai for line art? No but its one of the best in my opinion. Photoshop and some other art programs should have brushes that make the craggy lineart.

It didn't come out the way I anticipated even with all of the steps followed. You'll have to keep trying then and try some others mines isn't the only one out there mix match and experiment. Remember tutorials are guides in showing you how to do it but that doesn't mean its the ONLY way and It will take a while and i don't mean hours I mean days and weeks practice makes perfect. Good luck

This is cool :D. Use it myself, although paint.net isn't so great. Will you ever do a guide on how to do the retro Sugimori style from Gen1/2? That would be great as I can't seem to find one.

Looks great, but I can't or don't know how to recreate that craggy brush you used for the line art. (I only have Photoshop 5.0, no Photoshop CS5 or Paint tool sai)

I apologize if it's a stupid question, but I've been reading different Sugi-style tutorials and all of them employ the use of the Magic Wand. What purpose does it serve? No tutorial has yet to explain that. Just wondering because it's confusing me >_<

When you click somewhere with the Wand Tool, it will select everything of that color and only that color. You can set it so that it picks up more of the color or less with the Tolerance and the Contiguous allows it to pick up the color in a certain area.

yeah one is a multiply layer and the color layer the multiply layer is for the shadows, you can adjust this any way you like in terms of how dark or how light you want it to be
